Black Peppermint / Sky Country is a collaborative community arts project led by Palawa Elder and artist Aunty Cheryl Mundy trimanya and local artist Priscilla Beck. Working together with the Southern Beaches Landcare Coastcare group, the artists contributed to a community event for National Tree Planting Day in July 2024, planting a selection of black peppermint gums in the centre of the Jacks Flat Reserve in an arrangement that mirrors a constellation of stars whose story is significant to the area.
The gums will bear witness to a healing landscape, acknowledging culture and story and guiding the activities of people as they return this degraded farmland to a healthy native ecology, which in time will provide important habitat for native fauna.
